Nielsen was born in Copenhagen into a prominent artistic family. His father, Martinus Nielsen, was a theater director, and his mother, Oda Nielsen, was a celebrated actress. At 17, he moved to Paris to study at the Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi, immersing himself in the flourishing art scene before relocating to England in 1911.
